A Note from the FT's Foreign Editor
In just a few months Donald Trump’s administration has upended the world order – launching a global trade war through punitive tariffs that threaten untold disruption to businesses and markets, and land hardest on Asian manufacturers — wrecking supply chains that were only recently redrawn to work around tensions with China. For western businesses, unprecedented tariff levels on smaller Asian economies also mean the “China plus one” strategy of using them as a second export base can no longer be relied on. At the same time, US withdrawal of military support for its traditional allies has called into question the security of Taiwan and long-standing alliances with Japan and South Korea.
How should companies adapt to heightened economic and security risks across Asia? Where will supply chains need to be rerouted as tariffs and retaliatory measures change business models for exporters? Are there new opportunities via trade with Europe? What can be expected next from the Trump administration?
To offer the expertise and analysis that business leaders need, the Financial Times has created the FT Global Affairs & Business Council: a series of 4 invitation-only meetings of the world’s most senior businesspeople, held in 4 different cities, on 4 continents, which I will chair. Leveraging the FT’s unique convening power, these events will draw on the insights of government leaders, economists, trade and security experts to shed light on the turbulent new world order of Trump’s second term — and what may lie ahead.
